In a recent ruling, the Delhi High Court granted celebrity chef Kunal Kapur a divorce on grounds of cruelty inflicted upon him by his estranged wife. The decision overturned a previous family court's denial of divorce, emphasizing the wife's conduct as lacking in dignity and empathy towards Kapur.
The bench, comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna, remarked that the spouse's behavior, when devoid of respect and empathy, tarnishes the essence of marriage. The court highlighted the detrimental impact of making reckless and defamatory allegations against a partner in public, underscoring it as a form of cruelty.
Kapur and his wife tied the knot in April 2008 and welcomed a son in 2012. In his plea, Kapur, known for his role as a judge on the television show "MasterChef India," accused his wife of disrespecting his parents and subjecting him to humiliation.
Conversely, the wife refuted these claims, asserting her efforts to maintain communication and loyalty in the relationship. She accused Kapur of concocting fabricated stories to justify divorce.
The court acknowledged that marital discord is common but emphasized that disrespect and disregard towards a spouse undermine the sanctity of marriage. It dismissed the wife's allegations, citing Kapur's notable achievements as a celebrity chef within a short span of marriage.
Ultimately, the bench concluded that the wife's unsubstantiated claims amounted to cruelty, impacting Kapur's reputation.
