Dalai Lama’s Visit to Sri Lanka Blocked by China, Says Sri Lankan Buddhist Leader

By News   Desk

A top Sri Lankan Buddhist leader has accused China of obstructing the planned visit of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to Sri Lanka. Most Venerable Dr. Waskaduwe Mahindawansa, the head of the Amarapura Sambuddha Sasanodaya Maha Nikaya, made these remarks during a recent visit to India, where he handed over a portion of Kapilavastu relics to the Dalai Lama.

Dr. Waskaduwe shed light on the historical significance of the relics and his decision to present them to the Dalai Lama, emphasizing the importance of the spiritual leader's teachings. The relics, originating from Buddha's village, Kapilavastu, were discovered in India during the British occupation. A portion of these relics was sent to Sri Lanka and kept at Dr. Waskaduwe's temple for generations.

Despite potential diplomatic tensions, Dr. Waskaduwe stressed the importance of religious freedom and expressed his desire for continued engagement between Sri Lanka, India, and the office of the Dalai Lama. Additionally, he lauded the International Buddhist Confederation for its role in facilitating the smooth movement of the relics and promoting Buddhist heritage globally.

However, the Dalai Lama's proposed visit to Sri Lanka has faced opposition from China, according to Dr. Waskaduwe. He denounced China's interference and reaffirmed Sri Lanka's respect for the Dalai Lama as a Buddhist leader. Dr. Waskaduwe expressed hope for improved ties between Sri Lanka and India, emphasizing the cultural and religious bonds shared between the two nations.
