Singapore Recalls Fish Masala Over Excessive Pesticide Levels

By News   Desk

Singapore has initiated a recall of a popular Indian spice blend, Everest Fish Curry Masala, after authorities detected elevated levels of the pesticide ethylene oxide, which is deemed unsuitable for human consumption in food products.

The recall comes in response to a notification issued by Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety, which flagged the spice mix from India for containing ethylene oxide at concentrations exceeding permissible limits.

"The Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong has issued a notification on the recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala from India due to the presence of ethylene oxide at levels exceeding permissible limits," the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said in a statement.

Ethylene oxide is commonly employed as a pesticide to fumigate agricultural commodities and mitigate microbial contamination. However, its use is strictly prohibited in food products, despite limited permissibility for spice sterilization under Singaporean regulations.

The SFA has directed the local importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., to initiate an immediate recall of the affected products from the market. Consumers in possession of Everest Fish Curry Masala have been advised to avoid consumption and seek medical advice if concerns arise after intake.

"Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries," the agency stated.

While ethylene oxide finds application in controlling pests on spices, its excessive presence poses potential health risks to consumers. The SFA underscored that the recall was a precautionary measure to safeguard public health and safety.

The agency did not disclose the specific levels detected in the spice blend but clarified that they exceeded permissible thresholds mandated by food safety regulations.

As of now, Everest, the Indian manufacturer of the recalled product, has not issued any public statement regarding the matter. Food safety authorities continue to monitor the situation and may initiate further action as warranted.
