By News   Desk

In a remarkable achievement, Indian-American theoretical astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan has been featured in TIME Magazine's prestigious 2024 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The list, published annually, recognizes global leaders, innovators, and pioneers across various fields.

Natarajan, an associate professor at Yale University's astronomy and physics departments, was lauded by fellow astrophysicist Shep Doeleman in the TIME article. Doeleman highlighted Natarajan's knack for pursuing groundbreaking research, noting that her latest work has brought us closer to understanding the formation of supermassive black holes at the centers of most galaxies.

A versatile scholar, Natarajan's research interests span diverse areas in contemporary astrophysics, from gravitational lensing studies to the formation and growth of the first black holes in the universe. She is particularly known for her pioneering work on meticulously mapping the spatial distribution of dark matter in cosmic structures.

Natarajan's impressive academic credentials include an undergraduate degree and graduate work in the history and philosophy of science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics from the University of Cambridge. She has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale.

Among her many accolades, Natarajan is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She has also been the recipient of Guggenheim and Radcliffe fellowships.

At Yale, where she has been a faculty member since 2000, Natarajan serves as the director of the Franke Program in Science and the Humanities, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and understanding between scientific and humanistic disciplines.

After the announcement of her inclusion in the TIME 100 list, Natarajan expressed her joy and gratitude on social media, stating, "I'm honored, delighted, and grateful to be a part of this incredible group."
